Actual Lives writing and performance workshops

focusing on trauma, grief, and healing

This is a free community-based workshop that facilitates shared experience through writing and performance. Participants write from their own experiences and with the help of a facilitator, translate those narratives into a performance piece. These workshops are meant to awaken people to the uniqueness of their own perspective and the power inherent in sharing their experiences with the larger community through performance.

This project is based on Actual Lives, which was originally conceived by deaf writer and performer Terry Galloway, at the University of Texas, Austin. This October, Galloway will conduct three Actual Lives workshops as part of the Truth Be Told Project, sponsored by the CRA and the Mickee Faust Club. Galloway will be working with two community partners: Yolanda Franklin, a celebrated poet and visiting professor at FAMU, and Donna Marie Nudd, the co-founder of the Mickee Faust Club and professor of Communications at FSU. Participants will work together to give voice to a whole range of stories, memories, attitudes, and experiences that are not usually shared with the general public. Each workshop will begin with writing/sharing experiences and end with exploring ways to turn those into performance.

All workshops are free, with a light dinner or lunch provided (also free). Space is extremely limited, so interested participants should register for the workshop of their choosing in advance (only one workshop per person.)
